Club History

Our history

The Newtown Junior Australian Football Club was formed at the Newtown RSL on the 7th of February 1998 and we entered our first Auskick team in 1999 and our first u10 team in 2000.

Our club is a genuine community club, governed by a volunteer management committee elected at the end of each year by our members.

The inaugural committee was Eddie Greenaway (President), Neill Jones (Vice President), Andrew Loveridge (Treasurer) together with committee members Jenny Howard, Amanda Weston,  Jeffrey Thomas, John McGann, David Rathbone, Brad Newell and Michael Hosking.

The club plays and trains at the Alan Davidson Oval at Sydney Park.

In 2019, the club fielded more than 30 boys and girls teams across all junior age groups from Auskick through to the u17’s.

Over our 20 year history, the club has enjoyed success on the field with the following premierships and has been awarded the AFL Sydney Juniors ‘Club of the year’ on several occasions.

Swans beginnings

In 1996 a group of local footy fans started playing social footy games at Camperdown Oval, with large bins for point posts placed on either side of the rugby uprights. These ad hoc footy games continued at Picken Oval until 1998, when on 7th February the inaugural meeting of the Newtown Australian Football Club was held at the Newtown RSL, thereby formalising the social footy scene, with the added aim of promoting the game in the Newtown area. Originally this entity was for safer adult footy, but it was agreed that a major long term objective of the club was to promote junior football, and women’s participation in football. In 1999 the club fielded its first Auskick teams and in 2000 we fielded an under 10 side for the first time! Now it is history being made….

The first Committee was Eddie Greenaway President, Neill Jones Vice President, Andrew Loveridge Treasurer with Jeffrey Thomas, John McGann, David Rathbone, Brad Newell, Michael Hosking, Jenny Howard and Amanda Weston.

Newtown Angels

Before the Newtown Juniors, the suburb of Newtown was home to one of Sydney’s most successful senior football teams. The Newtown Angels were a foundation member of the NSW AFL competition and played their first season in 1903.
