Under 16's 2012
Congratulations Under 16s on a strong win against North Ryde Sunday 27th May 2012
Keeping order on the boundary was the ever-reliable umpire Jed Wesley-Smith who amazingly truned up to most games even though Oskar was unable to play - true committment - thanks Jed. Russell Keifel was also Mr Reliable with the goal umpiring - a job much harder and controversial than it may appear at first glance (and a job I would not like to take on)! Thanks also to Steve Houston and Simon Pullman for standing in when needed!
Thanks to Michelle Stewart for patching up the boys and and diagnosing their injuries on the sidelines - an unfortunately large number this year. Thanks also to Bob Boyd for his first aid assistance as well. Thanks to the Johns - Dale and Lane - and also George Petrovic, for stats, scores and siren over the year. Thanks also to Simon Lonergan, Pete Newton and Eddie Charlton for Ground Management - sometimes with its own controversies (think of the yellow and red cards....fortunately rare over the year). Thanks to the Canteen Queens - Katrina Foster, Ann-Marie Dombrowski, Jenny Boyd, Georgina Black and Orlando Read as well as Michelle Stewart and Simon Lonergan (Treasurer) for tracking the high finances and profits! Thanks to the barristas Kate McCallum, Sophie McDonald and Jenny Boyd - that coffee helped to make up for the early starts on some Sundays!
Thanks also to Katrina for sanitising and deodorising the jerseys eachweek (a minor miracle!) and to Renee and John Lane for water bottles. Finally thanks to all other parents for canteen, cleaning, cakes and general support over the years. I will be calling on those lucky Under 15s parents who will be returning next year for more of the same! On this note I am sorry that Oskar Wesley Smith will not be returningnext year due to a persistent knee injury. We will miss Oskar, Sally and Jed next year along with our departing under 16s. The good news is that we wil be left with one Oscar (Broady), as well as Ben (McK-F), Max, Gus, Dan, Monty, Alex, Ben (S), Riley, Tom, Banjo and Sam to make up a mighty team with the Under 14s in 2013!!!!
Have a great time at the dinner on 7 September at Sydney Uni Grandstandand presentation day. Remember to REGISTER EARLY for next year......expect some training over the summer break!!!
[Team Manager of the Decade]
Congratulations Mark Bateman- 10 Seasons with Newtown!
This year’s U16s coach, Mark Bateman, is celebrating 10 seasons with the Newtown Junior Footy Club. Mark has coached over 150 games for Newtown.Mark does not have any kids at the Club. He has always been a volunteer who gives to the Club, the kids and junior footy for the love of the game and helping the community.Mark played over 10 years senior AFL footy for the St Ives Club.
Mark first started coaching at Newtown in 2000 the second year of the Club and coached until 2006. Mark had one year coaching stints at Easts and Maroubra before coming back ‘home’ to Newtown.
He has coached Sydney City Reps and Sydney Pigeons (Reps) as well. Mark says he is enjoying coaching more than ever. The highlights for him at Newtown have been taking the U10s to the Grand Final in 2004.
Also, to see one of the kids he coached, Richard Newell, make the Brisbane Lions Reserves last year and be on the Lions’ Rookie List this year, looking to break into the Senior Lions’ team. Other players he has coached, James Howard and Chris Bolt, are playing Sydney Premier League for Balmain, and Chris has been in indigenous teams as well. However, the biggest highlight for Mark is seeing the boys be happy doing a sport each week. Also, the comraderie of the Newtown Club and the family orientation of the Club, which he was particularly grateful for when he went through a family tragedy a few years ago.
Mark has made a magnificent contribution over the years to help build up our Club from its fledgling beginnings to be a more competitive Club in the older teams.
Well done, Mark, and keep on keeping on! img src="URL" alt="alternate text" width="width" height="height" align="left />

UNDER 16s AMAZING WIN AGAINST WESTS
Newtown Swans JAFC news update 26th April
Without a doubt it was one of the best displays of hard contested football that any side has shown from the Newtown Club. An interesting point is that St Ives beat our Under 16s side by around ten goals last Sunday and Wests had previously thrashed that same St Ives side by 22 goals. That makes our 28 point win against West even more amazing. It was a very physical game and our players stuck up for each other when the heat was on. They played four quarters of hard football was great to watch from the sidelines. Sustained commitment to owning the ball won out easily over our much talked about lack of fitness. The final scores were 11.13.79 to 7.9.51
Some of the highlights were Monty’s incredible snap from the pocket along with his ‘fair but very big hit’. Lepo’s big day out in the ruck, Orsen’s centre bounce clearances, Adam Lanes terrific game, Daniel Black attack on goals, Ben Ford’s consistent pressure, Weso’s abilty to keep his cool whilst under pressure and Ready’s big tackles. Special highlight goes to Alex McDonald’s first ever goal for the team.

Well done to all the Under 16s who played in the trial game against Drummoyne. Played at henson Park the Newtown Swans defeated the Drummoyne side convincingly and played some excellent passages of football. There were 27 players who pulled on their boots for the game and a big thanks go to the Under 14s who played up. See you at the first game of the seasn on Sunday April 1st [no joke].
You Tube Legend series....Moments before their last game, 5 Club Pioneers talk about their time with the Club.

FORMER UNDER 16s DO WELL IN SYDNEY UNI WIN
Four ex Newtown U16s played an essential part in Sydney Uni U18s thrilling 6 point win over second on the ladder side North Shore at Gore Hill Oval last weekend. A riveting, see-sawing game until the third quarter when Uni got out to a 22 point lead turned into a battle of attrition in the dying stages of the game after North Shore kicked the first three goals of the final quarter. Sam Lonergan-Stewart was named best on ground for Uni for his tireless repelling of North Shore entries into their forward 50, and Chester Travers, Finnian Pauner and Victor Petrovic all stood tall when it counted. The win cemented Uni U18s hold on fourth spot on the ladder and their place in the finals.Their last game of the home-and-away season is this Saturday (July 20) against the sixth placed Illawarra side at Uni Oval No. 1 at 7PM under lights.
...FROM THE HOME PAGE 3RD AUGUST 2011. " 5 HEROES PLAY THEIR LAST GAME"
The team is fifth on the ladder, two games and percentage behind fourth spot and have a bye in the last week of the home and away season, so are unable to mount another finals campaign. In good form after coming within three goals of top side North Ryde U16 last Sunday, they are planning to go out with a bang by beating old rivals, Easts U16s in their last game. Five of these players have played with Sydney Uni U18s this season, and hopefully a couple more from this group will be joining them at Uni next season. So come along to ADO this Sunday morning and see what 11 seasons,150+ games, 250 training sessions, 1500 goals, a couple pallets of oranges, 4 coaches, 5 Finals series, 3 Grand Finals, 2 “Brownlows” and 1 report looks like, and share in this great occasion for the club. Other players who play there last game for the Club are Jacob Coughlin, Mack Etherington, Victor Petrovic, James McCarthy, Eren Altun, Calvin Goessler and Chester Travers.
ROUND 15 SUNDAY 31ST JULY
Well perhaps a bit light on the brilliance but there is no doubt that our performance against North Ryde today was the complete opposite to our capitulation against Pennant Hills. It was a delight to watch Newtown fight out a fast & competitive match & while there were no positives to come from Penno, today’s match proved how well we can play when everyone applies themselves.
Take pride from giving the number 1 team a fright this late in the season. A narrow loss to be sure (19 points) but I’m sure that everyone would agree that we’d rather lose
while challenging the opposition than simply dropping our heads & leaving our hands on our hips. Training will be on this week.A big match against Eastern Suburbs next Sunday means that we still have to work hard this week so we can finish the season on a high. Remember: Tuesday & Thursday, 6.00 to 7.30 at ADO. SEE THE PHOTOS HERE
See you then
ROUND 10 SUNDAY 19th June
It turned out to be a perfect day for football yesterday with wins to the U14s & the U16s & the club photos all done & dusted to boot. Good results off field as well so thanks to everyone who supported the club through merchandise purchases & kept the players fed & watered throughout the day.
While it would have been better to have converted some of the 12 behinds into goals the winning margin was comprehensive & a complete turnaround from our last match against St Ives. Perhaps we prefer the heat of the day to perform at our best. I haven’t seen the stats sheet but I’ve been reliably informed that Chester’s 5 goals helped us along the way. The team performance was great but I do need to thank the parents who helped out behind the scenes & made everything happen. Special mention to Ian Etherington for running boundary for the full 80 minutes & is probably feeling it right now. That’s a man of the match effort right there.
The challenge is ahead of us as we head to Trumper Park for a return engagement with Easts. We’re in the top 4 & having earned that spot we have to apply ourselves to staying there while the momentum is with us. That & I think that we all have a point to make.
The U14s are away at Kellyville so we will need to be at full strength on Sunday so if you’re unavailable you need to let us know as soon as possible.
A reminder also that training is on this week &, having missed out last week, we expect a strong turnout tomorrow & Thursday.
Note that we have had a venue change for the team dinner on Friday night. We will be having dinner at the Erskineville Hotel instead of Doughboy Pizza but I’ll send a separate email with all the details.
In final news the last win of the weekend occurred yesterday afternoon when Hugo & his team from Leichhardt won the 2011 Intermediate Division Theatresports Schools Challenge with a perfect score in the final round. I believe that there are videos on facebook for the socially aware.
See you tomorrow
Friday 13th May
Sunday’s match. We’re on the road again, travelling to St Ives however it is a late start so there shouldn’t be any excuses for tired players. We had a great win last Sunday & we need to build on that win & move ourselves up the ladder.
St Ives v NewtownSunday 15th MayAcron Oval,
Acron Road, St Ives.
Match time is 3.40 pm so all players should be at the oval no later than 2.40 pm.
Note that there could be delays due to road closures for the SMH Half Marathon for those that use the
Harbour Bridge or Western Distributor. Details of road closures can be found at http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/newsevents/half_marathon_2011.html?hhid=halfmarathon
So allow some extra time for traffic.
See you at the game.
Here is some late breaking news from the last GSJ President’s meeting: Further to our Presidents Meeting & Minutes of Monday 9th May, 2011, I can now confirm that the following changes will be made to the U16 draw.
These changes will take effect from this weekends games, Rd 6, Sunday 22nd May. Under 16 Div 1: Glebe replace Holroyd-Parramatta – Glebe to replace Holroyd-Parramatta in draw Under 16 Div 2: Holroyd-Parramatta replace Glebe – Holroyd-Parramatta to replace Glebe in draw . Westbrook/Hornsby to Division 3 – creating a bye in Div 2.This means Glebe has been moved up to Div 1 & Holroyd/Parramatta drop down to Div 2. Westbrook/Hornsby has dropped to Div 3 which creates a bye. So our remaining matches against Westbrook/Hornsby (R8 June 5 & R17 August 14) will be replaced with a bye & instead of playing Glebe at Sydney Uni on the 1st July we will meet Holroyd/Parramatta. I’ll send out an updated draw when it becomes available. In the meantime keep training.
